Wedding Cakes

The cake is the centerpiece of the day. As much a work of art as it is food. Traditionally the cake was made of fruit cake. However modern cakes are often made of sponge or chocolate cake as well as the traditional fruit. The cake can be decorated with wonderful sugercraft or with flowers. Cake toppers are also becoming popular again. These can be made to be dressed and with hair and makeup exactly the same as the bride and groom and are certainly a talking point. Generally you either love or hate cake toppers so they are a very personal choice.

It is becoming popular to feed some of the cake in the evening buffet and this does save some extra catering. If you have any people with special dietary requirements then it can be nice to produce a gluten free, egg free or nut free tier and it will certainly be appreciated. If you are having a small do but would like a large cake then false tiers can be added which look just like the real things but are made of polystyrene. Just don’t cut into them by mistake! Another clever way to save money is to simply order a plain wedding cake from Marks and Spencer’s and get your florist to provide flowers to decorate it with!

Do check with the venue if cake stands and a cake knife are provided. If not these can usually be hired from your wedding cake supplier. In Scotland it is also often worth enquiring as to the exact nature of the knife. I know of one wedding where the new bride and groom were presented with a very large very blunt sword to cut the cake with, which came as a bit of a shock!

I have listed some wedding cake suppliers in and around Edinburgh below. If you have a look at their websites you will get some idea of the many options available for cakes.
